Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an assertiveness training program on medical students’ self-concept. This research method was a semi-experimental study with pretest, post test and control group. The sample consisted of 50 second semester students of Kermanshah university. Beck self concept questionnaire was used. Assertiveness skill training was offered to 50 second semester medical students of Kurdistan University in four sessions (each 2 hours). To analyze the data, descriptive and inferential statistics, were employed. The results indicated that there was a significant difference between experimental and control groups in self concept (P<0.001). The rate of self concept in experimental group significantly increased in comparison with pre test and control group. Also, the ANCOVA analysis results have shown that assertiveness training program was effective on self-concept. Our findings showed that teaching assertiveness skills to students resulted in improved self –concept. Thus, it is suggested that these types of skill instructions, be included as a part of the university education programs
