Abstract

Aim: This study investigates the effect of self-control traning on marital conflicts and marital adjustment of couples.

Methods: The method was quasi-experimental with experimental and control group with pre-test -post-test design. 30 persons Of married individuals in Shiraz who referred to counseling centers in the spring of 2017, was selected by accessible sampling and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Both groups first responded to Sanaye and Barati's marital conflict and Bassbeli et al. marital adjustment questionnaires. The experimental group participated in 10 sessions of self-control education, while the control group did not receive any training, then both groups responded to the mentioned questionnaires. Data were analyzed using one way covariance analysis and multivariate covariance analysis.

Results: One way covariance analysis showed that in the post test in the experimental group, the mean score of marital conflicts was significantly lower than the control group. Multivariate covariance showed that the mean scores of reducing collaboration, increasing emotional responses, increasing support for children and reducing effective communication in the experimental group in the post-test were significantly reduced compared to the control group. One-way covariance analysis indicated that the mean of marital adjustment scores in the post test in the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group. Multivariate analysis of covariance showed that the mean scores of sympathy and consensus, satisfaction and cohesion dimensions in the experimental group were significantly increased in the post test compared to the control group.

Conclusion: Self-control training reduces marital conflicts and increases marital adjustment.
